Biomineral aerogels

Our biomineral aerogels are based on silica and a biopolymer binder formulation. This combination enables us to eliminate dust release while retaining the advantages of the inorganic silica base such as fire and temperature resistance. They are patent-protected.

Biomineral aerogel LSMA - hydrophilic / hydrophobic

Application: Thermal superinsulation

Our biopolymer aerogel LSMA contains up to 25% biopolymer binder depending on application requirements. The material is not dusty. High-temperature and fire-resistant grades are possible. The aerogel can be hydrophilic or hydrophobic.

Currently, the materials are still under development. They are available at lab scale and soon at pilot scale.

Our biomineral aerogel LSMA is undergoing real-life testing in the CUBE, the worldwide first carbon-reinforced concrete building. Check out our post on it here.

Typical product properties:

  • Particle size: 1-2 mm (tunable)

  • Aerogel density: 50-150 kg/m³ (tunable)

  • Thermal conductivity: 0.019-0.021 W/(m*K) (at 10°C, particle bed)

  • Surface area: 250-350 m²/g

  • Pore volume (< 100 nm): 3.0 cm³/g

  • Porosity: >90%

  • Hydrophilic or hydrophobic

  • Can be milled to powder and compressed into shapes
